2 Things Every Leader Must Do

I have never built a strong worship team or made any progress in my life or ministry position without the strong pursuit of wisdom and strong and Godly mentors.  Right now, I am working on pouring back into the ministry and training of strong leaders through free online tutorials.  These tutorials are not just for guitar players, but for effective worship leadership, music theory and other important aspects of creative ministry.

If you are in leadership or hope to be someday, stop and make sure you have these two things FIRST!

1.  Pursue Wisdom

The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Proverb 4:7

There are many ways to get wisdom, but it is very important that you take the initiative to find it!  I have a hunger for wisdom and knowledge.  I love to figure things out and push boundaries in all the aspects of my creative ventures.  It’s dorky, but I love to read a good manual for a piece of music equipment or a new software program.  But how do you become a strong leader?  How do you find the important wisdom needed to take your church or team to the next level?  First you have to love and seek wisdom.  Become a seeker of wisdom, become a seeker of God.  Open your life to the pursuit and embrace the journey that will lead you to deeper wisdom and a deeper love for God.  The best leaders that I have ever met were humble and pursued wisdom with great passion.  There is nothing that God has set before us as leaders that we cannot overcome when we seek his counsel and his wisdom.  A great leader is a constant learner.

2. Surround yourself with strong mentors

Proverbs 24:6Surely you need guidance to wage war, and victory is won through many advisers.  Another versions says it like this:  in the multitude of counselors there is safety!  See more versions of this scripture

As a young worship leader, I would have never made it without my spiritual and musical mentors.  I was very fortunate to have 3 older men, a youth pastor and a pastor lead me though the beginning stages of becoming a worship leader.  I looked to all of them to guide me and teach me.  It only takes one really strong mentor to help you along the way!  If you do not have a mentor in your life and you are pursuing worship leadership, take some time to pray for one and begin to look around.  My mentors became my best friends and taught me many things that have helped me in many areas of my life.  The most important thing is that you grasp this concept and expect God to lead you to the right people.  Surround yourself with wise counselors in every area of your life!
